Innovation North - Study and actionable recommendations

Steer Economic Development has been commissioned by the 11 Local Enterprise Partnerships in the North of England and Innovate UK to explore a coordinated approach to innovation in the North. The aim of this work is to identify where and how stakeholders in the region might work collaboratively to best harness innovation assets and know-how to help to close the North’s £37 billion productivity gap, as outlined in the Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review.

To complete this work, Steer Economic Development is drawing together the strategic evidence base on Northern innovation strengths, assets, opportunities, and eco-system, and consulting stakeholders.

The report is to identify the area’s strengths and weaknesses, and identify and prepare recommendations for the development of:

• A vision and narrative.
• Forward coordination and leadership.
• Areas for further investigation.
• Recommendations arising from issues and opportunities encountered during the study.
